Immerse yourself in the history of the Battle of Varus

Let yourself be transported to another time! Just 30 minutes from our hotel is the Kalkriese Museum and Park, located directly on the Wiehengebirge hills. Here you can experience the dramatic events of the Battle of Varus in 9 AD between the Romans and the Germanic tribes up close.

The permanent exhibition displays over 400 original finds from more than 30 years of archaeological research. These include thousands of Roman gold, silver, and copper coins, as well as the famous iron face mask, which is now considered the museum’s emblem. The exhibition is designed to be particularly exciting for children and young people: vivid models, illustrations, interactive effects, and modern media elements bring history to life and make it easy to understand.

Accompany the Romans and Germanic tribes every step of the way, discover fascinating details, and experience history that is much more than just numbers and dates—it becomes tangible and exciting.

History you can touch: Kalkriese Park

After visiting the museum, the trail leads you to the site of the Battle of Varus itself. From the 40-meter-high observation tower, you can enjoy an impressive view of the battlefield, while reconstructed sections of the ramparts give you an impression of the original terrain.

In the 20-hectare park, you can watch public archaeological excavations live – you might even discover a new find, as a lock, a belt buckle, and coins were unearthed in 2019. Along designated paths, you will learn exciting facts about the battle and the Romans, while pavilions offer new perspectives on history.

For children, there is the interactive puzzle game “Der Spurensucher” (The Trace Seeker), which imparts knowledge in a playful way. Special events are also held annually, such as the Roman and Germanic Days or the Easter Lights, which will make your visit an unforgettable experience. Take a walk through history and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this historic place.
