Immerse yourself in the history of the Battle of Varus

Let yourself be transported to another era! Just 30 minutes from our hotel lies the Kalkriese Museum and Park, right next to the Wiehengebirge mountains. Here, you can experience firsthand the dramatic events of the Battle of Varus in 9 A.D. between the Romans and the Germanic tribes.

The permanent exhibition features over 400 original artifacts from more than 30 years of archaeological research. Among them are thousands of Roman gold, silver, and copper coins, as well as the famous iron face mask, which is now considered the museum’s emblem. The exhibition is designed to be particularly engaging for children and teenagers: vivid models, illustrations, interactive features, and modern media elements bring history to life and make it easy to understand.

Follow the Romans and the Germanic tribes every step of the way, discover fascinating details, and experience history that is so much more than just numbers and dates—it becomes tangible and exciting.

History You Can Touch: Kalkriese Park

After your visit to the museum, the path leads you to the site of the Battle of Varus itself. From the 40-meter-high observation tower, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the battlefield, while reconstructed sections of the fortifications give you a sense of what the original site looked like.

In the park, which covers about 20 hectares, you can watch public archaeological excavations take place—you might even discover a new artifact, just as a lock, a belt buckle, and coins were unearthed as recently as 2019. As you walk along designated paths, you’ll learn fascinating facts about the battle and the Romans, while pavilions offer new perspectives on history.

For children, there’s the interactive puzzle game “Der Spurensucher, ” which teaches through play. Special events are also held annually, such as the Roman and Germanic Days or the Easter Glow, which will make your visit an unforgettable experience. Take a stroll through history and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this historic site.
